1.8 GTE 8v ohc
I've gone for the vauxhall astra 1.8 gte 8 valve, for one reason,It's a very easy instalation. You'll need a 1.8 astra gte engine, manta 1.8 gearbox, eng mounts, sump and pick up pipe.Straight swap the sump and pick up pipe, the engine has an uprated head and cam, competion pistons and shells. With this i'm going to use the 45's so i'm hoping for around 160bhp at the flywheel. You'll need to get the prop shortened and bobs your uncle, the easiest swap going. Also i've lightened the flywheel to 5kg and used arp rod bolts, these are the same as the 16v type. You've got to use these as the weakest link in these engines are the standared bolts and you don't want a rod coming out of the block.
Manta 1.8 ohc dizzy set up.
I've also used a opel senator rad,you need to reposition the bottom hose so it comes out of the face of the rad and not the side.Make sure you use an oil cooler or you will have problems with over heating as the oil gets extremly hot....
The exhaust manifold is a 4 into 1 manta type there's a bit of messing about with a hammer and a mig welder but the end result it fits quite snug.
From here you have an ideal base for the next eveloution, the 16valver.Get an engine from somewhere, swap the sump and pickup pipe from the eight valve, and get yourself an exhaust maniflod for the 16v,put it on carbs and then join the big boys.
